Additional Well Information

Loneliness, loss, displacement, and death loom large among the topics covered in the 15 Yiddish poems set to melodies by popular Israeli folksinger Chava Alberstein, and arranged by New York's exploratory Klezmatics, on this deeply sad and beautiful album. Anyone familiar with the Klezmatics' more rambunctious side will be impressed by the inventive delicacy and subtlety they bring to these elegant vestiges of fading Yiddish culture, virtually reanimating it with tangos, Hasidic melodies, polkas, and festive freylekhs that recall its vibrant past. Alberstein's low voice meshes beautifully with Lorin Sklamberg's high tenor, adding extra emotional resonance to a series of poems in the middle of the album that evoke the genocide twilight that enveloped the writers' world half a century ago. Their tragedy is redeemed in The Well. --Richard Gehr

What Customers Say About Well:

And I can't get enough of it. The Yiddish is pure, the accents great, and the music absolutely haunting.

Linguistically, if they aren't going to put them in the original lettering, they should have used German spelling rules. My only teeny-weeny complaint is that the Yiddish written in the liner notes is transliterated from the real Yiddish (written in Hebrew letters) into not just our letters, but for English speakers.

I was really surprised by the one negative review I saw for this album, but I think he only knew maybe funkier or more jazz-laden songs by the Klezmatics. I was so thrilled to see new music being made in Yiddish.

But this is nit-picking from a language enthusiast, so don't mind me. Though, he was wrong about calling this music Israeli-sounding: It sounds Eastern-European.old-timey.

The images evoked by this album are of late 19th century/early 20th century circuses from Russia and Eastern Europe.

The more you listen to the songs, more you love them. Even if you don't understand the words , some mystical feeling evokes deep , undescriptable memories , dreams and a sweet sadness. Thanks for this great work to Chava Alberstein and The Klezmatics. A wonderful album. The songs speaks - softly- to your mind and soul whoever you are.

Highly recommended. I love this CD. Beautiful and touching melodies. Enchanting voice of Chava Albertsein.

makes you happy and get over sadness at the same time. it's one of the best cd i've ever heard.

I don't know what the heck any of the songs are about, but it sounds great. I got hold of it again, and I remember why it was exposed it so much abuse: it was constantly on the player or on the coffee table, waiting to go on: it is a magical record. Listwn to this record. I bought this album completly at random about 5 years ago. It got drink spilled over it, stood on etc.
